Week 09/18-09/22

This week is my first week freed from my lantern project so I am now faced with the task of coming up with a new large project to work on. For this week I decided to freshen up on my milling skills so I modeled and milled a ring holder for my brass ring. My only past experience with our Tormach CNC milling machines was for milling the Turners Cube at the beginning of my sophomore year. Since then I almost completely forgot how to use them so I started this project to relearn the milling process.

I first had to start by modeling my ring holder and deciding a design for it as well. After landing on a design I got to modeling and after some resizing tweaks it was ready for camming. I had to create the path for the drill to mill the aluminum stock and it was my first time doing it which helped me learn the methods of how to do it. After modeling I had to take my stock of choice to the bandsaw to cut it down to size and prepare it for the mill.

My stock starting off was 2x2x2 inches and my ring holder was about 1.75x1.75x1.35 inches. So after about a day and a bit of milling my ring holder was complete without too many issues.

Hopefully by next week I will have a new project idea to start on that will take a bit more time and effort than this did. That being said I think it was a valuable project that helped me get reimbursed with the Tormach.
